The electromagnetic spectrum is a wide broadcast of different types of waves and energy that flow through the world. Radio waves have the lowest wavelength on the spectrum, and while most of us think about radio waves as AM and FM, they can also occur naturally in the world. AM and FM waves are both radio waves but are both different in key aspects.
All radio waves have frequencies and amplitude, both of which determine how strong the wave is and how it can be picked up. AM radio waves have a constant frequency but a changing amplitude, and FM waves have a constant amplitude but a changing frequency.
The waves travel at the speed of light and generally take the same journey. They go up a transmitter antenna and then are turned into radio waves and travel to your radio. Then they go down another antenna and produce the sound. This all happens instantaneously, and that’s how you can hear the radio every time you flick it on.
Television works the same way, although with much higher frequencies due to transmitting both audio and visual material. But the signal uses antennas to boost the signals so people can watch their favorite broadcasts. The power and strength that the electromagnetic spectrum offers are mind-boggling, and all we need to do is find a way to harness it.
As technology pushes the advances of what the world can do with the various wavelengths on the spectrum, we’ll be able to achieve more and more. But it’s important to understand the spectrum that powers it all.
